The TRE® backstory

Dr. David Bercelli, a trauma specialist and social worker, developed TRE® after years of working with individuals who had experienced trauma. He noticed that many of his clients exhibited similar physical symptoms such as shaking, anxiety, and trembling. These symptoms were often triggered by memories of traumatic events and could be difficult to control. Bercelli believed that the body held onto these feelings and that releasing them through physical exercises could help to alleviate symptoms of trauma.
TRE® is a unique therapeutic approach that recognizes the connection between the body and the mind. It works on the premise that the body holds onto trauma in the form of muscle tension and stress. This creates tension patterns in the body which can lead to chronic pain and discomfort. By activating the body’s natural tremor mechanism, TRE® helps individuals release this tension and stress, leading to a greater sense of calm and relaxation. The exercises are simple and can be taught to be done at home effectively with the guidance of a trained TRE® Provider.
The TRE® Process
TRE® involves a series of seven light exercises and stretches that focus on activating the body’s natural tremor mechanism. The exercises are designed to fatigue the muscles in the legs and the core, which then triggers the body to shake and release stored tension.
The tremors are similar to those that occur during the brain’s fight-or-flight response and help the body release built-up tension and stress.
The exercises are simple stretches and can be done at home or with the guidance of a trained TRE® practitioner. They typically involve lying on the floor and performing gentle movements and stretches. The exercises can be modified to suit an individual’s needs and level of comfort.
